For delinquent taxes, online full or partial e-Check payments are allowed, but payment arrangements for delinquent accounts must be made through the delinquent tax law firm.
Exemptions, values, and protests
The Harris County Tax Office handles payments, but Harris Central Appraisal District handles property accounts, appraisal information, and many exemption and protest tasks. If your issue is about account details, appraised value, or a homestead exemption, HCAD is the office to check next.
The Tax Office points users to HCAD for homestead exemption forms and related account updates. HCAD also provides an online property search and an iFile system for protests when you need to challenge an appraised value.
You can use HCAD to review property records, learn about available exemptions, and start a protest if needed. For current tax transparency updates, Harris County also directs users to the property tax database during August and September when local tax rates are being proposed and adopted.
Special cases to know
If you never received a bill, the Tax Office says you are still responsible for paying on time. You can call for the amount due, check your account online, or pay with your account number even without the statement.
If a mortgage company paid your taxes and you later receive an approved exemption, the refund is processed to the name and address on the tax roll. If there has been a change of ownership, tax agent, or litigation on the account, the Tax Office says you should contact the office directly.
Business owners may also receive personal property tax bills for furniture, fixtures, machinery, equipment, inventory, or vehicles even if they do not own the real estate. The Tax Office explains that business personal property is taxed separately from the real estate itself.
