If you need an inmate search in Harris County, Texas, this page helps you check jail custody, review case-related details, and figure out the next official step.

The main official tools are the Harris County Sheriff's Office Find Someone in Jail search and Offense Inquiry. This site is independent, does not give legal, tax, or financial advice or guarantees, and should be used alongside official resources.

Find someone in Harris County Jail

Have one accepted search detail ready before you open the jail lookup.

  • SPN by itself
  • SSN by itself with all 9 digits
  • Last name by itself with at least two characters
  • Last name and first name
  • Last name and date of birth

Use the Sheriff's Office search page to enter one approved option and review the custody result and facility information that appears.

  • Open the official jail search.
  • Enter one accepted name or number combination exactly as requested on the form.
  • Submit the search and review the matching result.
  • Note the listed facility so you can plan a visit, a bond payment, or another follow-up.

If a name search is too broad, try a more specific option such as SPN, SSN, or last name with date of birth.

Use Offense Inquiry for case details

Offense Inquiry is useful when you need more than a custody check. It can show whether the defendant is currently in the Harris County jail, release information for that jail, and case details such as the next setting date, time, and disposition.

You can search by offense or incident number, SPN, CDI code, or cause number. Start here when the jail search is not enough or when you need case-specific details: check case and offense information.

Facility locations and outside housing

Search results may point to a Harris County jail building or an outsource facility. Local jail buildings are marked in person only, while outside facilities list phone numbers for direct follow-up.

Visitation scheduling

In-person visitation resumed in a limited capacity. Visits are scheduled by facility, day, and floor, and visitors must register online before the visit.

You can plan a visit up to seven days in advance. On-site registration may be available if you arrive without an appointment, but visitation is not guaranteed because of facility limits and public health protocols. Attorney-client interviews and other essential visits are not affected, and family and friends can continue calls and video visits.

Review Harris County visitation details before you go.

Bonding and release questions

Cash or surety bonds are accepted at 700 N. San Jacinto Street, Houston, TX 77002. A cash bond can be posted with the exact cash amount, a cashier's check, a money order payable to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, or a debit or credit card through the Sheriff's Office payment provider.

No personal checks are accepted for cash bonds. The person posting a cash bond must show a state-issued government ID. Surety bonds are handled through approved Harris County bonding companies that charge a fee. Once bail is posted, the defendant receives a future court date and is released from jail.

Personal bonds and pretrial release bonds depend on court action. A pretrial bond can only be approved by a judge.

Mail, money, and phone calls

Before sending money or mail, confirm the inmate's jail location. Harris County Jail deposits include the Access Corrections app, kiosks, and phone deposits at (866) 345-1884, while outsourced facilities use different providers and rules.

Mail rules changed on June 16, 2025. Personal mail is no longer accepted by the facility and is routed through the Securus Digital Mail Center for scanning. Personal mail must include the sender's full name and complete return address, plus the inmate's full name, SPN, housing facility, and cell block location.

Legal mail and publications follow separate facility procedures and should not be sent through the general personal-mail route. Inmates housed in the Harris County Jail cannot receive phone calls, but they can place collect calls and use advance pay accounts. Money withdrawals from an inmate account require an in-person visit, a signed money release form, a valid government-issued photo ID, at least a $20 withdrawal, and a remaining balance of at least $10.

Common questions

You can search with an SPN, an SSN with all 9 digits, a last name with at least two characters, a last name and first name, or a last name and date of birth. Start with the official jail lookup and switch to a more specific number if a name search is too broad: search the jail roster.

Where do I check release or court setting information?

Use Offense Inquiry when you need more than a custody match. That tool can show whether the defendant is in the Harris County jail, release information for that jail, and case details such as the next setting date, time, and disposition. Search by offense or incident number, SPN, CDI code, or cause number.

Can I visit without registering first?

Visitors are told to register online before the visit. The Sheriff's Office says on-site registration may be available if you arrive without an appointment, but visitation is not guaranteed. Schedule as early as you can, up to seven days ahead.

Where do I post a bond for someone in jail?

The Sheriff's Office accepts cash or surety bonds at 700 N. San Jacinto Street, Houston, TX 77002. Bring a state-issued government ID if you are posting a cash bond, and do not bring a personal check because it will not be accepted. If you are using a bonding company, make sure it is approved in Harris County.

What if the person is housed outside Harris County?

Some search results point to outsource facilities in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Jefferson County, Texas. Check the listed facility name and use the corresponding phone number or address before you plan travel or send money. That matters because phone, mail, and deposit rules can change by facility.
