This page helps you search for and claim Unclaimed Property in North Carolina using official NC Cash tools and North Carolina Department of State Treasurer resources.

Use the NC Cash claim search first, then follow the claim instructions for online filing, document upload, or claim status review.

The main public tool for North Carolina Unclaimed Property is the NC Cash claim search. Search under your current name and any prior names that may have been used by a bank, employer, insurer, utility, or other holder.

  • Last name or business name
  • First name
  • City or zip code, if you want to narrow results
  • Reference number, if you received an Owner Outreach letter

Search broadly if you do not find a match the first time. Try nicknames, common misspellings, and a maiden name when applicable.

  • Select the properties you want to claim.
  • Choose “Continue To File Claim.”
  • Select your relationship to each property.
  • Enter claimant information and file the claim.

The claim search is free and secure. NC Cash states that claim information remains confidential and is used for claims processing and holder reporting purposes.

Claim types and processing

North Carolina handles claims through several paths, depending on the property and whether the claimant can be verified electronically. The claiming your unclaimed property page explains the main claim options.

Claim path How it works Timing noted by NC Cash
NCCash Match NC Cash identifies qualifying claims of $5,000 or less and sends a notification letter to verified claimants. A check follows in 6-8 weeks.
E-Claim Processing Some website claims may be matched electronically using claimant and owner information. Timing depends on whether the claim qualifies.
Signed form and documentation Some claims require a signed claim form and supporting proof submitted online or by mail. Normal processing time is approximately 90 days after required documentation is received.

Claims are processed in the order received. If more information is needed, a claims specialist may contact the claimant.

Claim document upload

If your claim requires a signed form or proof, use the Claim Document Upload portal. You will need the numeric Claim ID from the upper right-hand corner of your claim form and an email address.

  • Accepted file types are PDF, TIF, PNG, and JPG.
  • Each file must be more than 1 byte and no more than 10MB.
  • File names must be 100 characters or fewer and use only letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores.
  • Files must not be password protected.
  • Images should be cropped to the document, not extra scanner background.

Some claims require original documents and cannot be completed by upload. Check the claim form before submitting scans or images.

Proof of ownership

NC Cash may require proof that connects you to the property owner information on the claim. The required forms and documentation page lists examples of documents that may help prove identity, Social Security number, FEIN, or address.

  • Proof of Social Security number may include a Social Security card, W-2 form, income tax form, or pay stub.
  • Proof of FEIN for a business may include IRS confirmation or a tax statement showing the assigned FEIN.
  • Proof of address may include a driver license, tax bill, bank statement, utility bill, deed, school record, credit report, or other listed record showing name and address.

For property of a deceased relative, NC Cash directs claimants to contact the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where the relative lived before death to determine the proper estate documentation.

Claim status

After filing, use the Claim Status search to check progress. The Claim ID is required and can be found on the claim form or in the email notice sent when the claim was started.

If you lost the Claim ID, contact NC Cash for help before trying to check status online.

Property finders

North Carolina allows fee-charging property finders, but they must register annually with the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer. Beginning January 1, 2022, property finders must also be licensed with the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board as private investigators.

Users can still search and claim through NC Cash directly. A finder is not required to use the official search and claim tools.
