This page helps users complete a Medical License Lookup in North Carolina and understand which official tools can confirm license status, license type, and public board information.
The main public resource is the North Carolina Medical Board Licensee Search, which covers licensees regulated by the Board, including physicians, physician assistants, perfusionists, and residents.
North Carolina Medical Board Licensee Search
Use the North Carolina Medical Board Licensee Search to look up public licensee information. You do not need to complete every search field. A last name with a first name may return better results.
The search form supports several fields:
- First name
- Last name
- City
- County
- State
- Area of practice
- License number
- License type
- License status
Valid searches can use a license number, a last-name entry with another criterion, area of practice with city or county, or status with city. Complete the reCAPTCHA before submitting the form.
- Enter one or more supported search fields.
- Use fewer fields if you are not sure how the name or location is listed.
- Complete the reCAPTCHA verification.
- Select the matching licensee from the results to review the public information shown.
Search tip: If you are unsure of spelling, enter the first few letters of the last name rather than the full name.
Search tips and result details
The Licensee Search fields are not case sensitive. You can search by name, city, county, state, area of practice, license number, license type, or license status.
For a broader search, use fewer search fields. For a narrower search, add more letters of the last name or include a city or county. The County, License Type, and Area of Practice fields allow multiple selections.
The NC Medical Board’s licensee search tips explain how to adjust searches when results are too broad or when spelling is uncertain.
License status, public actions, and glossary terms
License status shows whether a license is active or inactive. Active licensees have a valid license to practice. Inactive licensees are not currently authorized to practice medicine in North Carolina.
Public actions may include disciplinary or non-disciplinary actions, such as revocations, suspensions, probations, limitations, restrictions, fines, or license issuance. The Recent Board Actions page lists public actions chronologically and is archived monthly.
Use the Licensee Information Glossary of Terms when a profile term is unclear, including terms such as renewal date, expire date, board certification, malpractice, settlement, suspension, and revocation.
Official license verification requests
For a formal verification letter, use the NC Medical Board’s License Verification Request. The Board does not accept written verification requests for routine verifications. Routine requests must be completed online, and completed verification requests are emailed immediately.
The fee for an online license verification is $50.00 and may be paid by VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. A verification that includes exam scores also costs $50.00 and is payable by check or money order to the NC Medical Board.
For exam scores, the NC Medical Board can include scores only for exams taken with the Board before 1976. For exams taken after 1976, request verification through the Federation of State Medical Boards.
Other North Carolina health license searches
The NC Medical Board search includes links for related license checks that are handled by other boards. Nurse practitioner verifications go through the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner verifications go through the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.
Use the North Carolina Board of Nursing license verification for nursing license or listing searches. Use the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy license verification for pharmacy licenses, permits, and Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner information.
NCMB does not verify Polysomnographic Technologists. Those verifications are handled through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
NCMB roster reports
The NCMB roster is a full listing of physicians, physician assistants, perfusionists, and residents regulated by the Board. It includes names, addresses, license numbers, areas of practice, and other details, but not phone numbers or email addresses.
A new roster report is run monthly. The roster is available electronically in Excel format, and the cost to purchase the current roster is $150.00.
Questions about roster reports may be sent to [email protected].
Licensure, renewals, and complaints
The North Carolina Medical Board licenses physicians, resident physicians, physician assistants, perfusionists, and anesthesiologist assistants. It also registers polysomnographic technologists and business entities such as professional corporations and professional limited liability companies.
Licensed and registered professionals and professional businesses typically renew annually, regardless of the original license issue date. A licensee who wants to stop active clinical practice in North Carolina may request inactive status.
Patients, medical professionals, hospitals, and other organizations may report concerns to NCMB through the File a Complaint / Report page. The general contact form should not be used to file a complaint, because complaint information submitted there will not be processed.
