If you want to narrow results, use Smart Search first and then move to the advanced filtering options. The site requires JavaScript and cookies, so make sure both are enabled before you search.
You can also use the separate search Justice of the Peace case records page for Travis County Justice of the Peace records.
Have the case number, party name, business name, or other identifying details ready before you begin.
- Open the Odyssey Portal or the Justice of the Peace public access page, depending on the court.
- Run a name or case search first, then refine the results with filtering tools if needed.
- Review the case details and available document entries shown in the search results.
- If the record you need is not available online, move to the clerk copy request options.
What the online search covers
The District Clerk states that the free online portal includes Family and Civil cases from 2006 to the present and Criminal cases from 2008 to the present. For felony-only criminal history checking in Travis County, the District Clerk also directs users to the Odyssey portal.
The County Clerk search pages list separate online coverage ranges for several record types. Civil case data is online from June 1986 forward, misdemeanor case data is online from January 1981 forward, and probate case data is online from July 1992 forward.
Redacted document images are not available for every period. Civil images are listed from December 2005 forward, probate images from November 2009 forward, and newly filed document images may take about 72 hours to appear online.
Hearing dates and times can change, so confirm those directly with the court if you are checking a setting or appearance date.
Copies and certified records
If you only need to view public court records, the online search tools may be enough. If you need a physical, certified, or authenticated copy, the clerk offices route those requests differently.
The District Clerk handles paid requests for physical copies of court records such as certificates of divorce, certificates of name change, original petitions, final judgments, and other filed records. Requests can be made online, by mail, or in person.
The County Clerk also offers copy services for records in its electronic library, on microfilm, or on paper. Online documents printed from your own computer are free but marked as unofficial copies.

Not every Travis County court record is handled the same way. The District Clerk notes that felony records before 2004 may be archived and may not appear in the portal.
The County Clerk says basic electronic searches for one name or business are free, but microfilm or paper record searches cost $10.00 per name for each ten-year period searched, plus copy costs. For misdemeanor searches before 1981, the search fee is $10.00 for one name and up to three AKAs, with additional AKAs charged separately.
Misdemeanor search results are limited to Travis County Class A and B misdemeanors and Class C misdemeanor appeals from municipal or Justice of the Peace courts. They do not include federal records or misdemeanor records from other counties, municipalities, or other Justice of the Peace courts.
District Clerk records requests
The District Clerk offers separate paths for court file records, open records, and administrative records. Use the court records route for filed case records, and use the open records route for Public Information Act requests, subpoena duces tecum, data requests, subscriptions, or other non-case-file requests.
For court file copies, the District Clerk accepts online requests, mailed requests, and in-person requests. Civil and Family records are handled at the Civil and Family Court Facility, 1700 Guadalupe Room 3.200, Austin, TX 78701. Felony records are handled at Blackwell Thurman, Criminal Justice Center Gault Annex, 501 W. 11th Street 2nd Floor, Room 2.300, Austin, TX 78701.
For open records handled by the District Clerk, requests may be submitted online, by email, by mail, or in person. The District Clerk says it can help only with records from that office, not records held by other Travis County offices.
