Due dates, interest, and motor vehicle taxes
For property taxes other than registered motor vehicles, Union County states that taxes are due September 1 and must be paid by January 5 to avoid interest. Mailed payments must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before January 5.
If January 5 falls on a weekend, taxes are due the following Monday. Interest is 2% for payments made January 6 through January 31, with an additional 3/4% charged each month after that.
Property taxes on registered motor vehicles are paid at registration or license plate renewal.
Payment plans and delinquent taxes
Union County offers short-term payment plan options through the Tax Administrator’s office. Use the Property Tax Payment Plan Request form if you need assistance with paying a property tax bill.
For current year taxes, the deadline to establish a payment agreement is December 15 of that tax year. The first payment must be made on or near the date of the original arrangement.
Payment arrangements generally cannot exceed six months, even when prior year delinquent taxes are included. Longer arrangements require supervisor or division director approval and must be based on demonstrated financial hardship.
Appeals and valuation review
Union County property owners may review the Notification and Appeal Process for assessment disputes. The 2026 appeal window closed on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, when the Board of Equalization and Review adjourned. The 2027 appeal window opens January 1 and closes when that Board adjourns its session.
Appeals may be filed by taxpayers for their own real or personal property value, or for the undervaluation of property owned by others. Property owners may present evidence and testimony to support their opinion of value before the Board of Equalization and Review.
After a Board decision, a taxpayer has 30 days from the date of the Notice of Decision to appeal to the North Carolina Property Tax Commission. Further appeals may involve the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Assessment and tax relief programs
The Assessment Division identifies property, lists assets, maintains ownership data, and administers tax relief programs for real and personal property. Program areas include Personal Property, GIS/Land Records, Present Use Value, Exemptions and Exclusions, and Customer Service.
North Carolina tax relief options include exemptions for educational, charitable, governmental, fraternal, and religious use. Exclusions may apply to certain historical property and property owned by elderly or disabled owners. Present Use Value is available for qualifying land used to produce agricultural, horticultural, or forestry commodities.
Forms for appeals, listings, exemptions, exclusions, Present Use Value, and tax relief are available through Union County applications and forms.
