Detention centers in Guilford County

The Sheriff’s Office operates two detention centers because of the county’s size and population. Both facilities follow the same policies, and inmates may be moved between them.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that approximately 19,000 inmates are booked into Guilford County detention centers each year, with an average daily population of more than 800 inmates across both facilities.

Visitation rules and scheduling

Visitors must register before scheduling a visit. Registration may be completed online at IWebVisit.com or in person at either facility. After registration, there is a 24-hour waiting period before scheduling, and later visits must also be scheduled 24 hours in advance.

There is no in-person or remote visitation on Mondays for either detention center, and there is no in-person visitation on holidays. In-person visitation is conducted by monitor in a designated area and is free. Remote visitation by personal smart device may include a usage fee.

Inmate mail, books, and clothing

Non-legal inmate mail must be sent to the mail processing center with the facility name, inmate name, inmate ID number, and facility ID. The envelope must also include a complete, legible return address with the sender’s first and last name.

Mail may be no more than 10 pages per envelope, and page size may be no larger than 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Accepted mail may include written or typed pages, photos, drawings, or greeting cards, but polaroid photos are not allowed.

Authorized clothing items must be purchased through the canteen. Paperback books may be accepted only when shipped directly from a publisher, internet distributor, or book club and must not be hardcover or present a security concern.

Money for inmate accounts

Funds may be deposited through the IC Team3 kiosk in the lobby of each detention center. The kiosk accepts cash, debit cards, VISA, or MasterCard. A VISA or MasterCard must be attached to an open bank account and not a prepaid card.

Cash deposits at the lobby kiosks are limited to $300 per rolling week. Funds can be deposited for an inmate housed at either facility and are credited immediately after the transaction is completed.

Only certified checks, cashier’s checks, or money orders are accepted by mail for deposit to an inmate account. No property or money can be exchanged between inmates.

Inmates can also respond to approved scanned mail through the secure messaging application on inmate tablets. Messaging begins when the inmate sends a message to a valid cell phone number, which sends the recipient a text notification with setup instructions.
